The Modern City
The Municipality of Pompeii was established on March 29, 1928, with a special law signed by Vittorio Emanuele III, King of Italy. According to sources from that time, there were 'approximately 7,000' residents in the new Municipality. The chosen seat was immediately Palazzo De Fusco, which still houses the Town Hall today. The building was an old hotel located right in front of the Sanctuary. Behind it lay the Fonte Salutare, the ancient baths, and the most popular park for those arriving in the Valley.
